The Back Story:

At 44 years of age, Bantam, Connecticut’s Walt Schutt was the first fatality at the 5/8th Lebanon Valley Speedway Oval.  Much has been said about that fateful August 23rd Saturday night back in 1980. (here’s the story)  Walt was never a winner in the modified division at LV, but he showed up every week and enjoyed the camaraderie as much as any Valley Regular.

I’ve included a full page ad from the Dirt Trackin Program from 1980, this is the car Walt was fatally injured in.

Schutt, who I believe owned the Toyota dealership in his hometown of Bantam, would be 75 years old this year.

Additional Comments:

Though he would later own and drive the car, this is not Walt Schutt in this picture. The guy standing next to the car is Art Worden from Lakeside, CT.  Art built this car in Bantam, CT with the help of myself, Bobby Knox.

Walt Schutt bought the car from Art Worden later on, and of note this isn't the car Walt was killed in.

Sincerely, Bobby Knox
