The Back Story:

This item was dropped on my lap, and at first I thought, big deal, I have plenty of these flyers hanging around in my old program totes I’ve had since I was a kid.  But after reading through it, I had to share it.  The part that got my attention was the “Car Specifications” rule sheet, or lack there of.

Seven.

That was the entire list of rules, and one of them was that seatbelts, helmets, firesuits were mandatory.  So unless you were borderline retarded, you really only needed to follow SIX rules to compete at the biggest race on Dirt.

The event paid a very respectable 10K, which could almost get you a decent house back then, had probably close to 200 cars entered, well over a 100 cars went home, and with admission only $10 (on back of flyer) a seat wasn’t to be had, with standing room only.

Last year, SDW had 13, yes thirteen cars go home, and the stands were half full….at best.  Perhaps it’s time to going back to 6 rules (I think everybody has the helmet/flame retardant suit thing down now) so we don’t have a field of IROC cars that all look identical and drivers racing their gas tanks.  Eff it, bring out the wings if they want to.  JMO.
