The Back Story:
Interesting look at some of the general information and payouts
from the 1975 season. Since the day
after auto racing was created, racers have always bitched about small purses
and the high cost of racing. I can
pull out old programs from this era, and racers wanted to eliminate big
blocks and start utilizing small blocks only. They also wanted to cut their tire bills, because the set or
two of tires they had to buy for the season was really high (I kid you not). That’s just human nature, you hand
somebody a $5 bonus one week, they expect a $10 bonus the following
week. But doing the math I do think $1,000
(or $900) to win with a $10,000 car and a much lower tire bill is better than
a $2,000 payoff with a $50,000 car.
(I’m taking a rough average here, some guys today spend a hell of a
lot more than that on a car, and some back in ’75 may have even spent less
than that)
